Aquarium of the Bay is perfect place to take the family on a rainy afternoon. This local gem has plenty of fish, rays, and sharks to entertain and delight guests. As the only aquarium situated on the San Francisco Bay, has a special focus on the animals and ecosystems indigenous to the area. Exhibits are divided into three sections: the first is “Discover the Bay”, which is an introduction to the various aquatic life that live in the Bay. Next visit, “Under the Bay” which is a set of two impressive clear crystal tunnels that allow guests to travel through shallow and deep-water habitats. The final section is “Touch the Bay,” an interactive exhibit where guests can touch animals like California King snakes and Leopard Sharks while learning about conservation. Aquarium on the Bay is educational, exciting, and with added emphasis on nearby ecology, it allows people of all ages to learn more about local marine life.

The Nancarrow family has made their chain of Elephant Bar restaurants a mammoth success story throughout California and the Southwest with a simple formula. They rely on excellent, innovative food, cooked well, at great prices – it's as simple as that. By offering a dynamic menu of American food tinged with fusion influences from all over the world, Elephant Bar has become a popular hangout for locals and visitors alike. The menu is astoundingly vast, with regulars recommending the sweet potato fries, baby back pork ribs, as well as the Ahi tuna appetizer. In addition, there are plenty of options available for vegetarian diners too. Those looking for a deal flock to the bar area during happy hour for price-reduced appetizers, which are very easy to fill up on. The service is competent, and overall, Elephant Bar is a dependable place to go for a quick bite and a tasty drink any day of the week.

If it's authentic, they will come – and Banana Island knows that. Crowds regularly pack into Banana Island for lunch and dinner daily, happily waiting for top-notch food. With influences fromThailand, Malaysia and Singapore, Banana Island does not disappoint. Try the roti canal, a fried, flat-grilled flour pancake served with curry, and the pineapple fried rice and mango chicken are famous across the Tri-Valley area. Be sure not to miss the Sarang Chicken, the mango prawns, or the pad thai – all three dishes nail the difficult balance between tangy and spicy. The service is attentive, if a bit slow during the rush, and the faux-tropical motif is fun without being too tacky. Banana Island is a great place for a casual business meeting or date. Also, takeout is available, and parking is free. Check their website for hours and specials.

Nation's Giant Hamburgers are truly jaw-dropping. And we mean it literally; they’re the biggest we’ve seen in California. Not only are these burgers gigantic, we don't think anyone serves up more tender or juicy patties. For six decades, Nation’s has been a Tri-Valley landmark. Perched atop a mountain of glorious (and cheap!) American comfort food, Nation's offers up fries, shakes, grilled chicken, French toast, omelettes, heaping strawberry tarts and pies like nobody's business. This historic gem is the taste of Golden State, made with love and open 24 hours a day!

San Jose’s E&O Trading Company uses inspiration from Asia's "spice route" to create a fusion restaurant that can stand up with just about any in the country. The innovative, delicious dishes have locals returning time and again. Keep in mind, these are not dishes for people with delicate palates—E&O Trading’s kitchen only puts out food that’s positively bursting with flavor. For a true taste sensation, try the spectacular Firecracker Chicken, which regulars rave over. The must-have small plate is the corn fritters, delicately fried and not too greasy, paired with a simply addictive dipping sauce. E & O's cocktails are also not to be missed. They're made with a crisp blend of Asian-inspired ingredients to perfectly complement your meal. The atmosphere is spacious and unpretentious and doesn’t fall prey to the cliché ultra-Asian style that sometimes plagues fusion joints.

This season, the Golden State Warriors welcome some fantastic new talent. First is coach Mark Jackson, a former star point guard who brings brains, inspiration, and fearlessness. Some great young players are at his command, too; Stephen Curry is a versatile point guard who shined in his rookie year. David Lee holds down the frontcourt, along with newcomer Kwame Brown, who's bringing his game to the next level. Naturally, Monta Ellis's quick-footed scoring will keep the Warriors in every game. They may have missed the playoffs last season, but this year, the Warriors are on the hunt.

California has long been on art's cutting edge, and a good deal of that is due to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. SFMOMA was the first west coast museum to feature exclusively 20th-century art, and it led to California and the Western US becoming a center of the American art world. Founded in 1935, the collection boasts over 26,000 works by arists like Mondrian, Pollock, Magritte and Ellsworth Kelly, to name just a few. Crucially, it continues to expand, with over 1,300 new pieces added since 2009. This is a world-class museum that warrants repeat visits, with many touring exhibitions and an educational program that is a crown jewel of the Bay Area.

2011's music scene included new hits by old favorites and debuts from some fantastic new artists. Here are five albums we'll remember in years to come:

	21 by Adele
The young British songstress exploded onto the pop scene in 2011 with her decidedly indie, soulful sound. Along with enjoying her powerful pipes, people found solace in Adele’s heart-on-sleeve ballads lamenting lost love, making “Rolling in the Deep” the surprisingly poignant hit of the summer.

	Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes
Fuzzy folkrock has never sounded as angelic and intimate as it has at the hands of Fleet Foxes. Drawing upon harmonies akin to The Beach Boys, the Seattle sextet crafted a beautiful mixture of layering to highlight singer Robin Pecknold’s poignant lyrics.

The King of Limbs by Radiohead
Paving the way for the artists in the top two spots, Radiohead is one of the original bands to make teeth-gritting confessions and alienation catchy enough for pop music. On their eighth studio album, the angsty indie band continues their successful evolution and makes a case for their continued relevancy with explorations in lush electronica.

El Camino by The Black Keys
Continuing a shift started by Brothers, The Black Keys polished their newly matured bluesy sound. Already catchy and talented musicians, the band took hip-hop cues from producer Danger Mouse to create a more complex sound.

So Beautiful or So What by Paul Simon
Yes, Paul Simon is still hip. As foreshadowed by the title, his latest album is cleverly tongue-in-cheek while still highlighting one of the original prophet’s ability to see the truth of the situation.
